WHAT IS ANEMIA??
Many women come to believe that its normal to feel tired ,weak or irritable just the price you pay for leading a busy life as a mom, a wife or even just as a woman, those symptoms can be caused by anemia a disorder that affects an estimated 400 million women world wide
It literally means “without blood” and refers to a condition in which blood is deficient in red blood cells(RBC) or the hemoglobin( iron containing ) portion of the RBC’s .the primary function of the RBC is to transport oxygen from the lungs to the cells of the body in exchange for carbon dioxide ,because the cells have less oxygen available to them, they have less energy to perform their normal functions ,hence you have pale appearance and you always feel tired .
HOW DO YOU KNOW THAT YOU ARE ANEMIC?
Two simple tests of your iron status involve your eyelids and finger nails
Look in the area under your lower eyelids- it should be rich pink/red color not pale
- Press on the end of your finger nails turning the red white- it should come back to red quickly when you release it not stay pale
- For women, anemia is typically defined as hemoglobin level of less than 11.0 gram/100ml and women are more likely than men to have iron deficiency anemia because of the loss of blood each month through normal menstruation
WHAT ARE THE COMMON CAUSES OF ANEMIA?
Anemia can be caused by both vitamin and mineral deficiency, a lack of folic acid, vitamin b12 and vitamin c in your diet can cause anemia, yet most common causes of anemia is iron deficiency
WHAT CAUSES IRON DEFICIENCY ANEMIA?
Iron-deficiency anemia can be caused by the following
DIET LOW IN IRON
Iron is obtained from food in our diets ,how ever only 1mg of iron is absorbed for every 10-20 mg of iron ingested , a person unable to have a balanced iron rich diet may suffer from some degree of iron deficiency anemia
BODY CHANGES
An increased iron requirements and increased red blood cell production is required when the body is going through changes such as growth spurts in children and adolescents, during pregnancy and lactation
GASTROINTESTINAL TRACT ABNORMALITIES
Malabsorption of iron is common after some forms of gastrointestinal surgeries most of the iron taken by food is absorbed in the upper small intestine any abnormalities in the gastrointestinal(GI) tract could alter iron absorption and result in the iron deficiency anemia
BLOOD LOSS
Loss of blood can cause a decrease of iron and result in iron deficiency anemia ,sources of blood loss may include GI bleeding ,menstrual bleeding or injury
HOW TO PREVENT ANEMIA THROUGH A PROPER DIET
Red meat is well known as a good source of iron but can also be rich in saturated fat ,sources that do not have a high fat content include
Eggs, spinach and other green, beans, lentils ,prunes, dried apricots ,unripe plantains , molasses and pumpkin seeds so eat plenty of these as well as green vegetables and beans which is rich in folic acid.
